Myongji Hospital said it would operate the Ansan Mental Health Trauma Center on commission to support the bereaved family members of the Sewol ferry victims, helping to stabilize their mental health and social adaptation.
“The hospital will pay consistent and systematic attention to the victims’ sufferings, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and persistent complex mourning disorder (PCBD),” it said. Myongji Hospital will run the center until the end of 2023, commissioned by Gyeonggi Province.
The mental clinic began its operation in 2014 to support Sewol ferry victims. It has managed the mental health of about 900 survivors and bereft families.
Myongi Hospital said it would focus on personal mental support, operating specialized healing and individual recovery programs. It also will promote the integration of victims and the community by providing education and cultural projects to foster civic leaders and strengthen families' bond from the tragedy on April 16, 2014.
Besides, the hospital will develop support systems and programs to establish an emergency and education system to prepare for future disasters. Forty medical professionals, including psychiatrists, nurses, clinical psychologists and social workers, will work at the center.
“Myongji Hospital has treated not only post-traumatic stress disorder for victims after the Sewol disaster, but also supporting their overall health,” said Kim Jin-goo, the hospital’s president. “Based on such experiences, we will step up efforts to provide comprehensive mental care, taking into account the specific situations facing the Sewol victims and the Ansan community.”
